Corfu History
The name “Corfu” is derived from the Byzantine word “Korypho”, which in turn originated from the Greek word “Koruphai” meaning “crests”. The island was said to resemble the shape of a sickle, or crest, by the inhabitants during the middle ages.

The Greek name for the island of Corfu (Korfu) is “Kerkyra”. According to ancient myth, the name “Kerkyra” came from the Nymph “Cercyra”, who was the daughter of the river-god Asopus. Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea fell in love with the beautiful Nymph, kidnapped her, and frolicked with her on the island. The result of their relationship was a son named Phaeax.

For the most part in medieval history, Corfu was under the protection of the Venetians since 1386. Corfu remained under Venetian protection until 1796, in spite of several attacks from the Ottoman Empire, the most notable being the sieges in 1537, 1571, 1573, and finally in 1716. Credit is given to the superior fortifications that were built in Corfu, the most notable are located in Corfu town, and are called the Old Fort, and the New Fort, respectavily. The island of Corfu is the only prefecture in Greece that maintained its freedom once the Greek civilization crumpled after the fall of Constantinople to the Ottoman Empire.

During the early 1800’s, Corfu was ceded to the French, than the Russians, and finally to The United Kingdom in 1815. During the cessation of the United Kingdom, Corfu became the seat of the British high commissioner. Finally, in 1864, Corfu was ceded along with the other Ionian Islands to the  kingdom of Greece, and has remained part of Greece ever since.
