Benitses Beach, Eastern Corfu (Korfu)
Many swimmers and sunbathers are attracted to the blue flag beach of Benitses, situated 12 km South to Corfu Town. It is one of the most frequented Corfu beaches, strewn with shingle and sand. The beach and its surrounding area are very well organized and offer water sports and boat hire facilities, piers, tavernas, fast food restaurants, cafes and bars, and an abundance of hotel resorts, hotels, apartments, studios and rooms. The village of Benitses in the last few years, has been part of the municipality of Achillion with a special place amongst other villages. Beside the crystal clear waters of the beaches, a new harbour, is being build with modern facilities, enhancing the village and the whole area.
The legend claims that "Benitses" was named after a pirate's boat, or even the pirate himself, who was enraptured by the beauty of this place. The ruins of the 3rd.Century courtyards and the Roman baths clearly depict that Benitses has been a place of retreat for centuries. In the 1970's, Benitses was transformed from famous fishing village to tourist resort; pioneering tourist development for the island and for the whole of Greece. The lively spirit of about one thousand residents is constantly in search for new ways of blooming.
